Quimper cathedral
The historical city of Quimper is within easy driving distance and provides not only the full range of city facilities, but it is also a great place to sample the bustling pavement cafes around the magnificent cathedral and take in the surrounding quaint architecture. In July, the city is host to the Festival de Cornouaille, a traditional breton music and dance festival, with events taking place throughout the town. Hundreds of musicians and thousands of dancers are brought together for a week of festivities, a wonderful experience for the whole family. Quimper is also famous for its hand-painted pottery, which has been made since the 17th century, and a tour of the factory and shop is well worth a visit.
THE AREA
Concarneau is one of the largest fishing ports in France. The fortified old town, Ville-Close, can be reached by a drawbridge and within its walls are many small shops, a fishing museum and chocolate factory. A walk around the ramparts provides stunning views across the harbour. There is a large weekly market on the mainland and a departure point for ferries to the nearby Glenan islands. The Festival des Filets Bleus is held in August each year, celebrating its celtic and maritime traditions.
Pont-Aven is well known because of the many artists, notably Gauguin, who flocked there in the 1800’s and it is easy to see why when you walk around this picturesque town. It still attracts artists today, which is obvious by the amount of art galleries and the town's public gallery. Originally, the town was a milling centre due to its position on the river Aven and some of the watermills can still be seen. At the end of July and beginning of August is the 3 day festival Fete des Fleurs d’Ajonc (festival of gorse flowers), which attracts dancers in traditional costume from around the world.
Brittany is renowned for its varied coastline, ranging from wild and rugged to long, sweeping sandy beaches. In the north-east is the Emerald Coast around Dinard and St Malo, and features dramatic cliffs and headlands The Pink Granite Coast is one of only three in the world, the others being in Corsica and China. This is an area of safe sandy beaches, perfect for families.

To the south is the Gulf of Morbihan, a natural harbour sheltered from the Atlantic Ocean. The area around the gulf has a range of megalithic monuments, the most well-known being at Carnac. In addition there are many islands accessible from the mainland by boat, such as Belle-Ile-en Mer, Ile aux Moines and Ile-de-Sein.
